I once heard someone say Spiritual Direction is a listening ministry. That encompasses spiritual direction so well for me. Spiritual Direction is listening to what is on the heart of a brother or sister in Christ and helping them identify where they feel God is working in their life. It’s reminding them of the character of God and how much he loves them. Spiritual Direction focuses on the soul and someone’s relationship with God. As a director, I often point people back to God and their relationship with Him.
One of the best explanations of spiritual direction that I’ve encountered is by Emily P. Freeman. If you are wanting to know more, listen to her podcast episode 167: Spiritual Direction for Beginners.
To take it a step further, Emily shares follow up episodes on How to Find a Spiritual Director and Family and Spiritual Direction with John Freeman.
